Contingency Planning Applies to All Businesses and Family Organizations

Stop operating your business by the seat of your pants! -  You’re constantly swimming upstream and feeling overwhelmed.

Our neighborhood in this ever-changing dynamic world has gone through one of the most destructive natural disasters of all time.  Many of our neighbors have lost everything and some have lost their loved ones.  And days after this disaster people are without food, housing, and vital necessities.  To make matters worse they are stranded, with no access out. They need food, medical help, transportation, and shelter.  To add to this worst-case scenario, many are without communication and most all electronic technology is now useless.  Imagine being in such a dire situation!

What we’ve noticed is most businesses, including major ones like gas stations and food markets are closed due to being without electricity for days.  Not having gasoline available to travel for safety or help is a “crime” - a dereliction of responsibility, when it should NOT have been that way.

Why have so many vital businesses failed to plan for such an outage, when an inexpensive remedy was available to them?  I’m writing this from an area that is without electricity and there are no service stations and markets open.

This one example of lack of planning for such a calamity, which is not only disrespectful but also harms customers who depend on these businesses, ultimately impacting the revenues of those small business owners.

For less than $1,000, businesses could have equipped themselves with an automatic backup power generator to keep gas pumps, cash registers, credit card terminals, lights, and more running. Gas stations, for example, typically have all the fuel needed on-site to power a generator for weeks.

Businesses that genuinely care about their community, customers, and sustained cash flow would have invested in a backup generator. But because it would have been a one-time expense—and it wasn’t "raining with a tropical storm" at the time—many short-term-focused business owners chose to do nothing. The result is a loss of revenue and people unable to access gasoline, leaving them stranded in dangerous situations.

We wanted to share this real-life example, which is currently playing out across affected areas of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Southwestern Virginia.

We are writing this message to small businesses that meet the following criteria: first, they care about the people they serve; second, they want to remain open and operational during a disaster; and third, they seek the benefit of uninterrupted cash flow to pay their bills and employees.

It’s a sad reality that not all businesses think this way. If you own or operate a business carelessly, with little regard for your clientele, then you need not read any further.

------------

Now, with those sorry businesses gone, we want to share with you how we can help you plan for both natural disasters and societal disasters, like COVID.

We have operated our family business for more than 24 years on a philosophy that the customers come first and “making money” the American way naturally follows.  We strive for customers who appreciate value and quality.

We have a combined experience of many years in contingency planning and have facilitated the process for some of the largest international corporations in the world.  We know how it works and unlike the shoemaker whose children have no shoes, all our businesses have been built on solid contingency plans.

We want to show you how to create a practical and dynamic contingency plan for your business. The plan comes from you and your key people who know your business inside and out. It evolves as your business changes and grows. Once it is integrated into the infrastructure of your business, you have a “paid-up insurance policy,” so to speak, providing peace of mind and confidence for the future. You don’t need the proverbial “luck of the Irish” to keep your business running through calamities and turbulent times.

Don’t misunderstand - we aren’t saying it will be as easy.  You’ve always been a creative and hard worker and willing to take some risks.  You’ll still need to “pedal the bicycle,” but with a plan in place, you’ll always know what to do next and where you’re headed. You won’t be lost! Business life is never easy, and that’s why you own or operate one today. Challenges will always arise, but with a contingency plan as your compass, you can navigate each day without feeling overwhelmed.

Best of all, when a natural disaster or societal crisis strikes, you’ll be ready to keep going when the going gets tough. It’s the ultimate stress relief, empowering you to act decisively and save your business.

Even the smallest business can have a contingency plan, and families should have one as well. Just look at what has happened all around us – families enduring disasters that are both unimaginable and heartbreaking.
