Ransomware appears to be really starting to gain momentum.  To review, when we say ransomware, we are referring to a virus that infects your computer (or computers), and encrypts your data and demands a ransom of money.  Once you make this payment, your data is unlocked.  The reason why people are paying these ransom notes is because once your data is locked, usually there is NO way to un-encrypt it, except by the bad guys that did it in the first place.  Because people are paying the ransom, this is just encouraging the bad guys to work harder to infect more computers.  Other "bad" thing about Ransomware is that it just won't infect the computer that initially gets infected, the programs will "worm" its way through the network to ALL other computers, USB drives, mapped drives, servers and will encrypt everything.  That is why we're hearing stories about companies paying $40,000 to the bad guys.  Right now the only way to avoid this is to be careful what you click on in your email and websites and to make sure you have multiple backups and to make sure those backups are working!  If you have any questions about this, talk to one of our friendly techs at 828-262-3359 or just stop in!  We'll be glad to help!
