Printers.  The bain of everyones existance.  With that being said, they're a requirement and actually the number one accessory purchase for the computer.  In fact, they are so profitable, some retailers gain at least 25% profit for the year on the sale of ink alone!  There are a number of type of printers you can choose from.  Obviously, the old school printers of dot matrix no longer exist (actually believe it or not, there are some folks who still usie them due to their current work software requirement).  Inkjet and laser are the two most common printers.  Inkjets are the cheapest printers you can purchase (someas low as $30).  However, the cost per page to print can be as high as .10 cents page.  A rule of thumb we use to determine how many pages you can print is around 500-700 out of a single inkjet cartridge.  Inkjet cartridges do dry out, even in their sealed package.  So for the folks who don't print often and/or buy an excess amount of ink cartridges find that the ink doesn't last long.  It's because the ink is drying up.  So the bottom line for inkjet printers are they are cheap to purchase up front however, cost more in the long run due to the ink cost.

Laser printers are the opposite.  They cost a little more upfront however, their cost to print per page is a penny or less!  That's because a toner cartridge can print upwards of 5000 pages!  Laser printers also print just as well (sometimes better) than an inkjet printer.  They tend to print quicker as well.  For these many reasons, laser printers are what we recommend for an office environment.  They can also handle much more of a heavier workload.

 Question of the Week

Katy from Dallas TX writes in asking what type of printer should she get for her dorm room.  We suggest a Muti-Function Printer (also knowns as an MFC printer), these types of printers will copy, scan, fax and of course print.  We suggest she get an inkjet printer, only because a laser printer would be a little too much for a simple dorm room.  If you're in an office environment, then a laser would be the way to go.  Get a MFC printer that supports wireless (that way you don't need to run a cord to your computer from your printer) and also one that supports printing from your tablet and phone, makes it easier to print from your wireless devices (such as an iPad and iPhone).

For more information on printers and pretty much everything technology either call us at 828-262-3359 or stop in at our shop at 178 Southgate Drive, Suite 13 in Boone.  We're in the plaza right next to Walmart.
